Supply Chain Management Gati to cash in on incoming global biz K.V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad , Jan. 17 AS companies world over look at India to expand their reach, Gati Ltd, a logistics player , has firmed up plans to tap this India-centric business, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region. Cashing in on its extensive reach in India, the Hyderabad-based company plans to offer comprehensive logistics services to those companies that plan to enter or have already started their operations in India. Gati, which opened an office in Singapore recently, would now focus on other key cities in the region. "After Singapore, we will look at China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Myanmar," Mr Manoj Agarwal, Head (Marketing), told Business Line. "There is a great scope for inflow of goods after the opening up of the markets. There is a ready market available. We would like to tap this opportunity, particularly from players in the Asia-Pacific region," he said. "China is a huge opportunity." Accordingly, the company participated in the `Made in India' campaign held recently in China. While opening offices could be one option, the company was open to forge tie-ups with local players in the respective countries. Also in company's plans was, Chennai-Yangoon coast-to-coast service. The other important focus area for the company would be optimum utilisation of warehouse space. It planned to revamp its warehouses by setting up automated express distribution centres in different locations across the country. These `mechantronic' warehouses would help the company utilise its vertical space. Elimination of manual handling would reduce damages and pilferage.
