Move afoot for Rs 3,000-cr HVDS power project

THE State Government and power utilities have firmed up plans for a Rs 3,000-crore high-voltage distribution system (HVDS), to provide reliable power supply at affordable costs to the over 1.6 crore consumers.
The HVDS is expected to further reduce transmission & distribution, commercial losses and arrest theft of energy. An annual investment of Rs 1,000 crore has been envisaged over the next three years.
Giving these details, the Chairperson & Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation (APTransco), Ms Rachel Chatterjee, said a committee of engineers/officials of Transco/Discoms would be constituted soon. The HVDS has been initially operated as a pilot project at Tirupathi in Southern Power Distribution Company (APSPDCL) with good results, according to a press release from the APTransco.
The high tension (HT) industrial sales, which was only about 3,903 MU in 2000-01, reached 6,120 MU during 2003-04 and is expected to touch 7,482 MU during 2004-05. It is projected to grow to 9,000 ME during 2005-06.
The capital investments in the power utilities/discoms during the calendar year January-December 2004 would be Rs 1,600 crore as per revised estimates, a jump of Rs 165 crore, as against the tariff order level of Rs 1,435 crore, the Transco release claimed.
