THE Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Thursday appealed to the Centre to extend the fiscal incentives to the six districts of North Bengal that are now applicable to the North-East States. He said this was urgently needed to ensure industrial development in these districts, whose economic status was at the same level as the North-East States.
Speaking at the CII Partnership Summit 2005, Mr Bhattacharjee said he had taken up the issue with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, during the latter's visit to the city recently. Earlier, the matter had been taken up with the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Responding to questions, he said that "having a Marxist Government in the State for more than two-and-a-half decades does not mean we do not wish to change in keeping with contemporary needs." As such, West Bengal was focused on showcasing its attractiveness in select sectors of industry and attracting investment in areas such as iron and steel, chemicals and plastics, agri-business, IT & ITES, cement and leather. Efforts were being made to convince automobile companies to invest in the State. "West Bengal is the right place to invest because here, the Left is right," he said.
