At Café Masala, you pay for what your food weighs

DO you know how much what you eat weighs? And that eating out can be more economical if you weigh the food before paying?

It may sound bizarre but entrepreneur Mr Saeed Shervani has launched a chain of restaurants called Café Masala where this is exactly what is done - you weigh and then pay.

Part of the Rs 150-crore Shervani Group, with interests in sugar, batteries and hospitality, the novel venture is being positioned as one in which the outlets do not display menu cards with prices but instead offer consumers choice in food as well as pricing.

"The `weigh and pay' concept allows customers to mix and match dishes as per their preferences and pay exactly as per the weight of the food. Café Masala offers 100 gram of food for Rs 18 for a base meal that includes a choice of rice, pulses, chana and a couple of vegetables," Mr Shervani, Managing Director of Shervani Hospitality Ltd, told Business Line.

He said the company had earmarked Rs 5 crore to set up Café Masala in Delhi initially; it plans to eventually expand to other cities including Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

While the two outlets currently in Delhi are company-owned, Shervani Hospitality is keen to take the franchisee route for further expansion.

Apart from the Café Masala outlets, the company also owns and manages the Mexican restaurant chain Rodeo, resorts in Uttar Pradesh and a hotel in Delhi.
