Listing out, he said for Poovan variety, per plant per year, 100 gm of nitrogen, 30 gm of phosphorus and 300 gm potash would be necessary. For, `rastali', the norm will be 200 gm, 60 gm and 330 gm respectively.

A leaf nutrient concentration technique has been evolved to ascertain the extent to which the nutrients are present in each variety.

He further said, the incidence of the `sigotaka' leaf spot disease in the `poovan' variety has caused severe damage to the crops in Karur, Tiruchi, Pudukottai and parts of Thanjavur districts, which accounted for 46,000 acres under banana.

Cool temperature with dewfall in the night and warm condition in the day have been aggravating the disease.
