Agricultural Policy Minimum price guaranteed for Dindigul, Theni maize growers Our Correspondent
Madurai , Jan. 10 MAIZE growers in Dindigul and Theni districts will be ensured a minimum guaranteed price under a pilot project launched by the National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd in association with the Agriculture Department. The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Jagmohan Singh Raju, speaking to the media persons at Dindigul recently, said that under the project, 5,000 tonnes would to be procured from Dindigul and Theni districts at Rs 525 per quintal, for which payment would be made in three days. With the aim of eliminating middlemen and protecting farmers from price crash, maize would be procured from farmers when the market prices are higher than the guaranteed price and in the case of a crash, farmers would be paid the agreed price of Rs 525 per quintal. Farmers can sell the product in the market also. The federation would extend all help to farmers in the cultivation of maize and the Department of Agriculture would facilitate loans from the nationalised banks, he added.
