Fisheries college scientists to study impact of tsunami

TWO teams of scientists of Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) at Tuticorin are undertaking a study of the impact of December 26 tsunamion the bio-diversity and biomass of fisheries resources and on the composition and quantity of species along the coast of Tuticorin.

According to the Dean of FCRI, Dr R. Santhanam, a three-member team is engaged in the collection of water samples, fish and sediments for microbiological analysis to identify the presence of pathogenic bacteria.

Initially, these samples are taken from Nagapattinam and would be collected from the other tsunami-affected districts. Another team headed by Dr V.K. Venkataramani is undertaking a study, under which the faunal assemblage and diversity of fauna, including marine ornamental fishes and associated fauna is to be closely monitored. An assessment of the damage to the coral reefs in the Gulf of Mannar will be part of the study.
