Kateel (Dakshina Kannada district) , Jan. 9

THE Karnataka Government is planning to implement a programme to recharge the water table in the State. The Government will implement the `pond for every agriculture field' programme from the next financial year, according to the Karnataka Agriculture Minister, Mr K. Srinivasa Gowda.

Mr Gowda was participating in the valedictory of the 25th annual `Krishi Mela,' organised by Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) at Kateel in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday. He said that an announcement on the progamme will be made in the next Budget, and it will be implemented through the proposed Agriculture Development Corporation.

Stating that a Rs 150-crore revolving fund has been set up to help arecanut growers in the State, he said the Government would provide succour to growers through this fund, if the price of arecanut comes below minimum support price level.

To a request of SKDRDP to find a solution to vanilla growers' problems, he said the crop suffered a price crash because of the middlemen, who did not give importance to the quality of crop. The Government is taking steps to alleviate the problems of vanilla growers.

The three-day `mela' concluded with the farmers coming out with a set of resolutions. In this, they urged the Government to come out with an action plan for organic farming in the State.

Policy on cashew

Earlier addressing a press conference in Mangalore, Mr Gowda said that the Government is planning to come out with a policy on cashew that will help improve cashewnut production. There is a good demand for processed cashew in the domestic and international markets. Members of Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association have informed him about the demand for the crop, he added.
