The Hindu Business Line : More corporate aid for tsunami victims

THE corporate sector continues to chip in with money, materials and labour to provide assistance to those affected by the tsunami waves that hit the coast on December 26.

Tata Relief Committee, a 100-member team from the Tata group of companies, has set up base camps at Tirunelveli and Tiruvarur to distribute relief materials, according to a press release.

Relief operations in Kanyakumari began on December 30 and material procured from Chennai has been distributed to over 2,500 families.

In Tirunelveli and Tuticorin they have assisted over 1,500 families.

At Nagapattinam and Cuddalore, where work began from January 1, they have accumulated relief materials for about 10,000 families.

The group is collaborating with the local administrations and plans to extend operations to more villages.

The Chennai-based Murugappa group is contributing a total of Rs 2.5 crore to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and for voluntary work for the coastal communities affected in Ennore and Tiruvottriyur in Chennai and in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam.

In addition, its employees, customers, traders and suppliers have also contributed to the relief work. These funds are being channelised through the AMM Foundation, a trust to discharge corporation social responsibilities activities of the group, to provide basic amenities, a press release from the company said.

The Hinduja group company, Ashok Leyland, has donated Rs 1 crore and its employees have contributed Rs 13 lakh. The company is also providing logistic support to NGOs and is working with the Confederation of Indian Industry to provide long-term solutions such as fishing equipment and community centres to the fisher folk.

Lanka Ashok Leyland, its associate company in Sri Lanka, has handed over two special vehicles to the Sri Lankan President, Ms Chandrika Kumaratunga, for relief work.

Hyundai Motor India had contributed Rs 2 crore and Dishnet Wireless Ltd Rs 1 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
