Krishna project phase II to end by July

Hyderabad , Jan. 5

THE Andhra Pradesh government has given the clearance for launching the phase II works of the Krishna water project immediately.

The project, envisaged for supply of drinking water to the State capital, will be completed by July this year at a cost of Rs 600 crore.

Stating this at a press conference here after a two-day conference of District Collectors and Municipal Commissioners on Wednesday, the Minister for Municipal Administration, Mr K. Ranga Rao, said the phase II works would be partly funded by the proposed World Bank's Rs 1,200-crore assistance for urban infrastructure development.

Mr Rao said the State government would soon empower municipal commissioners to sanction development works up to a limit of Rs 20,000.

At present, these commissioners have powers to sanction works only up to Rs 2,000.

The Minister also said penal interest would be waived on property tax arrears in 109 municipalities in the State if the arrears were cleared by the end of this month.

Earlier, addressing the valedictory function of the conference, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, announced a grant of Rs 25 lakh to the Suryapet Municipality for improving sanitation by collecting garbage door-to-door and eliminating the need for keeping dustbins in streets.

He said the government would grant Rs 10 lakh to other municipalities for making similar efforts in their areas.
