Call to release addl free sale quota of sugar to check price

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Jan. 1

THE Bombay Sugar Merchants' Association (BSMA) has urged the Government to release additional free sale quota immediately for the current month to bring down the prices within reasonable levels.

The main reason for the steep rise in prices is lower release of 12 lakh tonnes for January. In a representation to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Sharad Pawar, and other Ministries concerned, the association has recommended that the Government should immediately consider permitting import of white sugar with no import duty to curb the psychological trends towards higher prices.

Yet another step that needs to considered for containing sugar prices at reasonable levels is to re-impose immediate restrictions relating to storage/sale that exist an year ago.
