THE All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has threatened to move the court, if the AP Pollution Control Board (PCB) does not get an environment assessment study (EIA) conducted before awarding the contract for the mega housing project at Madhurawada near here to a Singapore company.
The AITUC district council General-Secretary, Mr M. Ananda Rao, in a representation to the PCB stated that in accordance with the notification issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) - SO.801 (E) dated 7.7.2004 - EIA was imperative for any project involving an investment of Rs 50 crore.
Mr Rao said that the Singapore company was being awarded the project for Rs 139 crore. In accordance with the notification, EIA was required for projects with over 1,000 dwelling units and discharge of 50,000 litres of sewage a day.
He alleged that the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) had finalised the project in favour the Singapore firm without obtaining EIA clearance from the MoEF despite the fact that the project envisaged dwellings for 2,000 people with discharge of two lakh litres of sewage a day.
