Tsunami causes Rs 6-lakh loss in Dakshina Kannada

THE total loss in Sunday evening's high tidal waves in Dakshina Kannada district has been estimated at Rs 6 lakh. Ten fishing boats have been damaged due to the waves.

The Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Mr Aravind Srivastav, told newspersons in Mangalore on Monday that seven fishing boats were damaged at Ullal beach and three at Bengre beach.

Of the seven boats damaged at Ullal, six were small boats and their loss has been estimated at Rs 1.60 lakh. Another one is a big fishing boat and the loss has been estimated at Rs 2 lakh.Mr Srivastav said that the district administration would issue a notification asking fishermen not to venture into the sea.

The boat cruise being organised as part of the Karavali Utsav has been cancelled till December 31.

In Udupi district

The total loss in Sunday evening's high tidal waves in Udupi district has been estimated at Rs 5 lakh. Apart from damage to five boats, crop loss has been reported.

The Udupi District Deputy Commissioner, Mr T. Sham Bhat, said that five boats were damaged at Kodibengre wharf in Udupi taluk as they collided against each other.

The loss has been estimated at Rs 1.90 lakh. Three boats were damaged at Shiroor and Byndoor areas in Kundapur taluk with the loss being estimated at Rs 1.60 lakh.

Apart from this, high tidal waves rushed into Bijjady area in Kundapur taluk. The total loss of crops in this incident has been estimated at Rs 1.50 lakh.

Mr Bhat said that 5,000 persons were evacuated from Mattu Padukere area and 2,000 people from Tarapati area in the district on late Sunday night. The district administration has asked fishermen not to venture into the sea. Most of the fishermen have returned to the shore, he added.
