Private sector reservation Make haste cautiously
Reservation in the private sector is a hot topic today. The Government could think of reservation in the farm sector, which is also private. There is an acute shortage of labour in many parts. Farmers will have no difficulty providing 50 per cent of the jobs under their control to any community. But will any one come forward for the back-breaking work at paltry wages? The experience of the Maharashtra EGS suggests otherwise. The Government would do well to move cautiously, says Sharad Joshi B>.

Mid-Year Review: Not a sanguine picture
One finds little cheer in the mid-year review of the economy so far as the fiscal performance thus far is concerned, even if the overall economic outlook is bright. With fiscal measures unlikely to be able to support sustainable 7-8 per cent growth, the Government will have to involve the private sector in a big way and attract larger foreign direct investment to meet growth and development objectives.

Hidden costs of comparative advantage
The principle of comparative advantage works well in an ideal world where trade incurs no human or environmental costs. But in the real world, where someone has to bear every cost, global trade draws passionate grassroots opposition. The right formul a for trade should favour the prudent use of natural resources for maximal economic benefit to the greatest number of people.
