TN: Plan to start gur units under NAMT hits snag

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Dec. 19

FIVE proposals under the New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (NAMT) to start gur manufacturing units in Perambalur district, awaiting clearance from the State-level coordination committee, are in lurch owing to an objection raised by the Directorate of Sugar and Public Sector Mills.

Delayed payment from sugar mills and higher returns from gur and affordable level of investments had motivated the entrepreneurs in the district to apply for setting up the units under NAMT scheme. While the factory price for sugarcane is just around Rs 750 to Rs 800 per tonne, the gur units offered around Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,200 per tonne.

However, the objection by the authorities over the use of registered cane and unregistered cane as well for gur manufacturing units, except the one produced by the entrepreneurs in their own fields, has now put spoke into their efforts to start the gur units.
