Announcements Industry & Economy - Power Kawasaki Heavy sees scope for producing power from waste heat K.V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad , Dec. 18 PREDICTING huge potential for generating power from waste heat produced in cement plants in India, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd (KHI) has started selling the idea to local cement manufacturers. The Japanese company, a leader in the technology, hopes that the model unit set up at an India Cements unit in Andhra Pradesh recently is a good example to be showcased to others. KHI's knowhow went into the Vishnupuram unit. "Now we are looking at commercial sales of our technology and expertise," Mr Hirohisa Nagasako, Manager in Plant and Infrastructure Engineering Company of KHI, told Business Line. He said that power from waste heat was a niche business segment. It gave power on one hand and protected environment on the other. "But it has got good opportunity as demand for energy savings are growing globally," he said. Searching for new markets was imperative for KHI as almost all the cement companies back home were following the model. The KHI particularly saw tremendous opportunity in China and India. This, according to him, was because fuel and energy costs were growing. Mr Nagasako was in the city in connection with a seminar aimed at creating awareness on the technology. Employed by the whole of Japanese cement industry since 1980s, the technology is being promoted by the Japanese Government through New Energy and Industrial Technology Organisation (NEDO). The Indian unit is the third one promoted by NEDO after Vietnam and China. The Rs 100-crore model unit at Vishnupuram near the State capital, opened in September last, was set up in Indo-Japanese collaboration called `Green Aid Plan'. The model unit, a first in India, produced 8 MW of power by consuming waste gases, while reducing 45,000 MT of carbon dioxide annually. Encouraged by the initial results, India Cements itself was planning to install two more power units based on the new technology. "We are in talks with KHI," Mr N.V. Bapu, Deputy General Manager (Projects and Planning) of India Cements, said. The company planned to replicate the Vishnuparam model at Chilankur in Cuddapah district and Malkapur in Ranga Reddy district.
