GAIL moots mega hydrocarbon transmission entity

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 17

GAIL (India) Ltd has mooted the formation of a Government-owned mega hydrocarbon transmission company by unifying the extensive network of pipelines in the country.

Mr Proshanto Banerjee, Chairman & Managing Director, has written a letter to the Planning Commission and the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council proposing the mega hydrocarbon transmission company, a company statement said here on Friday.

The concept of a unified hydrocarbon transmission company was proposed by GAIL in the wake of a plan to merge the public sector oil companies for creating one vertically integrated entity.

According to Mr Banerjee, the unified ownership of this extensive network of pipelines by an exclusive pipeline utility company under the ownership of the Government would provide non-discriminatory open access to all pipelines users.

It would also lead to optimisation of operation and maintenance expenses and associated tariff benefits besides appropriate sharing of Right of User (RoU) in land whenever possible and a better coordinated development of all on-shore pipelines as an essential energy infrastructure for the entire hydrocarbon sector.
