Nabard credit to top Rs 20,000 cr in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 17

THE State Focus Paper from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has projected a quantum jump in ground level credit flow under the priority sector in Kerala during the next financial year.

According to Mr B.S. Shekhawat, Chief General Manager, Nabard, this will be distributed as: Agriculture and allied activities (Rs 7,755.47 crore); Industrial sector (Rs 3,446.79 crore) and the Service sector (Rs 8,898.93 crore), aggregating to Rs 20,101 crore for 2005-06.

Mr Shekhawat said this while addressing the State Credit Seminar organised by the Nabard here on Friday. The seminar was the forum to discuss with the State Government and bankers the credit potential as mapped in the district plans so as to set realisable targets for credit flow.

Nabard had prepared a district-specific "Potential Linked Credit Plans" for the State for 2005-06, result of the year-long exercise by district development managers to assess the exploitable potential in each district.

The seminar identified infrastructural development, agriculture and allied activities, housing, tourism, information technology, small-scale industries sector and micro enterprises as the `vibrant sectors' in the Kerala economy.

Nabard officers made detailed presentations on minor irrigation, plantation and horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, rural infrastructural development, non-farm sector activities and micro finance.

The presentations analysed in detail the sector-wise status, development potentials, gaps in infrastructure and focused on the areas where action was required by the Government, banks and planners.

All banks have been required by the Reserve Bank to base their credit targets on Nabard's potential-linked credit plans. The bankers must focus their attention on meeting the genuine requirements of those in need of credit and achieve overall development of the State.
