Biospectrum awards for 2004 announced

DR Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of Serum Institute of India, Pune, has been chosen Person of the Year and Dr Manju Sharma, former DBT Secretary, named for Lifetime Achievement for the second annual Biospectrum awards in biotechnology for the year 2004.

The DBT Secretary, Dr M.K. Bhan, in Bangalore, gave away the awards. Dr Poonawalla gets the award for putting India on the global vaccines scene and Dr Sharma for starting the Department of Biotechnology and putting it on the reforms path until her retirement in March 2004, a release said.

In the other two categories, Dr K.K. Narayanan, MD of agri-biotechnology company Metahelix Life Sciences, was adjudged the biotech Entrepreneur of the Year; the diagnostic kit JEV Chex to detect Japanese encephalitis virus, and developed by Bangalore-based Xcyton Diagnostics, was named the biotech product of the year.

The awardees were chosen from five biotechnology segments - biopharmaceuticals, agri-biotechnology, bio-informatics, bio-industrial and bio-service, the release said.
