IN a move to focus the attention of the industry on the regional and suburban colleges in the southern region, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organising iTalent 2004.

Mr P.K. Mohapatra, Chairman, Education Sub-Committee, CII (SR) and President and Chief Executive, RPG Enterprises, said that this event would be of relevance, especially as many of the IT companies were shifting to smaller towns such as Indore, Thiruvanthapuram, Coimbatore and so on.

The main reason being adequate manpower available in these places and also attrition rate would be much lower than in a metro.

Mr Ravi Shah, Chairman, iTalent and Vice-President, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, said that an event like this would also give industry exposure to the best of students from these colleges.

In the first stage, 413 students from 76 colleges have submitted 146 project concepts. This was narrowed down to 20 projects for the final event on January 7 and 8, 2005, before a live audience of industry representatives.

The topics addressed vary from chalet online - for hotel automation, intelligent congestion management systems, mobile controlled automatic gate openers, vehicle tracking system - using SMS, among others.
