`Demand growing for GIA courses'

Mumbai , Dec. 12

THE Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has chalked out a major plan for its educational courses to be offered at Mumbai during the year 2005.

"Considering the tremendous response we have received since we opened the centre in Mumbai in July 2004 and the growing demand from the booming gem and jewellery industry in the country, we have worked out various Diploma and Graduation courses for the next year (2005)," Mr Deepak Bagai, director of GIA said newsmen.

The demand for the trained people is ever increasing from the Indian diamond industry since the GIA opened its India centre in Mumbai hardly six months ago, he added.

For 2005, GIA India offered various extension as well as Resident Diploma courses. The extension courses include diamond gradation, gem identification, and coloured stone gradation and CAD/CAM for jewellery. The diploma courses cover gradation in diamonds, gemology and jewellery designing.

Emphasising on the quality of education, Mr Bagai stated the content with the ones taught in GIA USA, even the Diplomas and Certificates awarded to students are received from USA only. "Fees for all the courses in the country are cheaper by about 20 per cent than the GIA USA programmes, Mr Bagai said.

"India is now the third largest retail diamond market behind the US and Japan. And as the industry grows, so does the need and demand for trained jewellery professionals," he added.
