Human Resources Cognizant Tech, PSG pact for in-campus training of recruits L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore , Dec. 2 THE industry-academia collaboration between Cognizant Technology Solutions and the PSG College of Technology is explicit revolving around Cognizant recruits. The company has picked 250 students off three premier institutions Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT) and the PSG College of Technology in the city during the current year. These students have the offer letter on hand from the IT service provider. They will be joining the company in July 2005, after graduation. The company has, in the meantime, decided to train the recruits on the fundamentals of software engineering and related modules. The training, according to Mr R. Chandrasekaran, Managing Director, Cognizant Technology Solutions, would cover theoretical concepts in software engineering followed by hands-on training based on case studies. The modules have been prepared jointly by Cognizant and PSG. The MoU between PSG College of Technology and Cognizant Technology Solutions incidentally is a pilot roll out. The company is contemplating to enter into similar tie-ups with other institutes and extend the in-campus training to other cities as well. Cognizant has been recruiting students off-campus from specified renowned institutions across the country, but has not until date conducted or facilitated any training to the recruits until they joined the company. `This MoU is aimed at reducing the lead-time for deploying the recruits in project engagements by enhancing the quality. This is basically to get the students `industry-ready' even as they graduate,' he said. Industry sources concede to the felt need for such orientation programmes in view of the rapid pace of development on the industry front. `This collaborative agreement would enable the recruits from these institutions advance to the second phase of training in our campuses. This would cover Cognizant's proprietary processes, behavioural training and case studies on advanced technologies. The lead-time for deploying the recruits on projects is ultimately reduced,' he added.
