While 1.85 lakh SHGs will be added in 2004-05, two lakh SHGs will be added in the next year.

Kinnigoli (DK dist), Nov. 28

THE Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, has said that the Government wants to add another 5.85 lakh SHGs in two-and-a-half years.

Launching 1,503 self-help groups (SHGs), promoted by the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project and Corporation Bank, at Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday, he said that there are 10.90 lakh SHGs in India.

While 1.85 lakh SHGs will be added in 2004-05, two lakh SHGs will be added in the next year.

Plans are there to add another two lakh SHGs in 2006-07, he said.

"We must ensure that 1.85 lakh SHGs are formed this year. We are well on the way to achieving it. By looking at the figures, I am confident that we would have exceeded the target by March 31, 2005," he said.

He said that every bank and every branch manager is obliged to carry out government's policies.

One of the declaration polices of the Government is that banks must give Rs 1,05,000 crore as agriculture credit this year.

"I will ensure that this is done by March 31, 2005," he said. Last year, banks disbursed Rs 80,000 crore as agricultural credit.

Any student should not be denied of professional education because of lack of money. Another declaration policy of the Government is that no student, however poor he or she may be who has been admitted to professional college, should say that he or she was not able to study because of lack money.

"Such a student must be given a loan without any collateral up to Rs 7.5 lakh. I will ensure that is done not every year," he added.
