ITPO keen to strengthen trade dimension of IITF

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi , Nov. 28

AS the two-week-long India International Trade Fair (IITF) drew to a close on Saturday, the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) has resolved to strengthen the trade dimension of the fair.

Even as IITF has been designed as a trade fair, the fair has been in the recent years taking the contours of a carnival. This trend was acknowledged none other than by the ITPO Chairman and Managing Director, Mr N.N. Khanna, at the award presentation ceremony, organised to recognise excellence in display at various pavilions in IITF 2004.

He expressed confidence that ITPO would be able to bring back the trade dimension of the fair to centre stage. The heartening feature of the 24th edition, according to the ITPO CMD, is the response from foreign countries. "This year we had overseas trade delegations from 46 countries as against 33 last year," he said.

As regards the 25th anniversary of IITF, Mr Khanna said that ITPO has "not yet conceptualised the contours of the fair beyond what we are regularly expected to do." At the same time, he held that ITPO was determined to celebrate the 25th edition of IITF in a creative and imaginative manner.

The central theme of IITF 2004 was agriculture and information technology.

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Mr B.L. Joshi, who presented the awards, said that IITF 2004 testifies India's progress in the globalisation endeavour.
