States asked to enact laws on tourism trade

THE Centre has asked State Governments to enact legislations on tourism trade to take strict action against unscrupulous elements and harassment of tourists.

Addressing members of the Consultative Committee attached to her ministry, the Minister for Tourism, Ms Renuka Chowdhury, said to curb cheating and fleecing, the State Governments have been requested to deploy tourist police at all important tourist destinations. They have also been requested to set up single-window clearance committees.

The Minister noted that the Ministry of Tourism had approached the Home Ministry to review the restricted area provisions to open up more areas in the country's north-eastern region to tourists.

Ms Chowdhury said there had been a 24 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals and a 38 per cent increase in foreign exchange earnings during the first 10 months of this year.
