Management methods

This is with reference to "The eclipse of management doctrine" (Business Line, November 24). The concept of democratic leadership is not new.

Such management thinkers as Henry Fayol, Marry Parker Follet, and Chester I. Barnard advocated the `cooperative effort' in management, emphasising the role of workers.

Experiments have shown that a democratic or participatory leadership leads to highest productivity. This kind of leadership, mostly adopted in the private sector, would prove successful if implemented in the government sector.

C. Ramesh,

Keeramangalam (TN)
