Govt awaits GoM report on foreign newspaper titles regn

THE Government will take a decision of permitting foreign newspaper titles from registering in India after the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up to look into the print media finalises its report.

After the controversy surrounding the publication of the International Herald Tribune (IHT) in India, the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister had decided not to permit registration of foreign newspaper titles. According to the Registrar of Newspapers in India, Ms Deepak Sandhu, special care is being taken when confronted with foreign-sounding titles.

Meanwhile, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Jaipal Reddy, said after inaugurating the RNI Web site that an intensive exercise is being undertaken to de-block unused titles. "This is being done to enable easy availability of titles to publishers," he said.
