Kochi , Nov. 21

IN line with the India 2020 Vision of the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is configuring village resource centres (VRCs) across the nation, taking into account the dynamics of rural development.

The Village Resource Centre will serve as the window for interactive information on demand at the village doorstep spanning a wide variety of areas of utility to the village community, such as education, health, business, agriculture and empowerment of women.

Based on its strength in diverse fields, the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham will host the VRCs across the nation and Dhanalakshmi Bank has been selected as the first financial services and banking partner for the project. The Bank will also provide computing infrastructure for a VRC at a cost of Rs 7 lakh, a press release from the bank said.

One of the key components of the President's India 2020 Vision is electronic and knowledge connectivity, bringing the best of education, information and literacy to the vast majority of citizens all over India.

At the induction function held at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mr T.R. Madhavan, Managing Director of Dhanalakshmi Bank, presented a cheque for Rs 7 lakh to Mata Amritanandamayi Math towards setting up the first VRC in the presence of Dr V.S. Hegde, Programme Director of ISRO.

In his keynote address, Mr Madhavan offered the bank's assistance in extending finance to the needy under the micro-credit scheme as also to arrange linkages with non-governmental organisations for setting up self-help groups.
