Two-wheeler exports accelerate in April-Oct

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 21

DRIVEN by increased sourcing of motorcycles by foreign partners of local manufacturers, two-wheeler exports jumped by 41.3 per cent in the April-October period this year.

Motorcycles exports increased by 42.45 per cent in the period to 1,44,169 units compared to 1,01,209 units in the same period last year.

Bajaj Auto was the biggest bike exporter at 65,309 units in the first seven months of the fiscal (41,565 units in the year-ago period) followed by Hero Honda at 32,286 units (19,934 units). Other sizeable exporters in the category were TVS Motor Company at 22,022 units and Yamaha at 19,657 units.

The export of bikes is expected to accelerate in the near future with reported plans by Hyosung (Kinetic's technical partner), Kawasaki and Honda to increase sourcing from India.

Scooter exports too rose by 38.77 per cent to 38,220 units (27,542 units in the year-ago period) largely due to plans by Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India (HMSI) to use India as an export hub for scooters.

HMSI contributed to the bulk of scooter exports at 24,183 units in the April-October 2004 period compared to 15,790 units in the same period last year. The distant player in the second place was LML Ltd with exports of 4,675 units in the period.

Meanwhile, mopeds, though a fledging category domestically, saw its exports jump by 37.88 per cent in the first seven months of the current fiscal to 18,514 units (13,428 units in the year-ago period). Exports were largely driven by Majestic Auto, which sold in 15,138 units in overseas markets in the period.
