Intel to help expand rural IT penetration

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 19

INTEL Corporation on Thursday announced a partnership with the Ministry of Communications and IT to create solutions for making technology more accessible to teachers in India, especially in the rural areas, as also to develop `computing platforms' to address the issues of affordability and local infrastructure conditions.

Under the agreement, Intel will work closely with companies, including the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), content creation companies and channels, to help make PCs more affordable to the masses.

"We want to give something back to the society. The goal is specifically to aid in education of young people to become computer literate so that they can use IT to enhance their lives," the visiting Intel CEO, Dr Craig R. Barrett, said at a conference.

"We are also interested in campaigns and programmes to promote ownership and access to Internet and PCs. We are interested in acting as consultant and facilitator to bring technology into communities, especially rural communities."

As part of this initiative, Intel will provide drawing board plans to the Government on how to deploy technology for education and push the use of technology in schools.

According to an official release issued by the Ministry, the Government and Intel would work jointly to make broadband wireless technologies (WiMAX), an affordable and viable last-mile option for rural service delivery.

The two would also work on a special PC ownership programme to encourage adoption of computers in the country, the release said.

Modalities of the scheme would be worked out to ensure that citizens get the benefit of superior technology at competitive prices and financing options.

It, however, did not divulge details of the programme.
