Plan to use technology in judicial system

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 19

THE Union Government is preparing a paper on the use of technology in the judicial system that would be laid before the Cabinet in six months, the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr Kapil Sibal, said here.

"We have asked the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), a body under the Department of Science and Technology, to prepare a paper on use of technology in the judicial system," Mr Sibal said on Friday pointing out that that use of technology could reduce the investigation time to one-fourth and impart more "certainty" in the system.

"We have to carry it forward in national mission mode. A committee of experts will deliberate on the paper," Mr Sibal said adding in the next six months, the paper would go to the Cabinet.

Experts suggested use of satellites, setting up of more DNA testing laboratories, and creation of database to strengthen the criminal investigation system. Meanwhile, Dr V.K. Kashyap from the Central Forensic Laboratory said that there was a need to reorganise the forensic set up in the country.
