Backward linkage scheme for farmers launched

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 18

THE Government has formulated a Backward Linkage Scheme, involving Panchayati Raj institutions, to ensure regular supply of farm produce that can be processed. Intended to benefit farmers, the scheme has been launched by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, according to an official statement.

The scheme will try to ensure minimum wastage, make value addition, avoid distress sale and provide remunerative income to the farmers. Under the scheme, the processors are eligible for reimbursement from the Ministry at 10 per cent of the total purchase made by them from the farmers in a year subject to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh.

However, the scheme will be valid only when there is a contract between the processor and the farmers. Under the contract, the processor is required to provide quality seed, feed, medicine, fertiliser, pesticides, technical know-how and other extension services to the farmers at a reasonable cost, the statement said.
