Bangalore , Nov. 10

BHEL's Electronics Division here has commissioned its ninth solar power plant (SPP) in Lakshadweep. The environment-friendly plant forms part of what is set to be the largest solar power plant in Asia Pacific.

The grid-interactive 100-kilowatt peak (kwp) plant has been set up on Kalpeni island. With this, the company said it has added 800 kw of solar power to the power generating capacity of the sunny coral islands in the Arabian Sea.

BHEL's eight other SPPs of ratings up to 150 kwp have been set up on the islands of Agatti, Andrott, Bangaram, Bitra, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy. Besides, two more projects of 100 kwp each are in advanced stages of supply and commissioning in Amini and Chetlat islands. The plants at Bangaram and Bitra are being upgraded.

The solar photovoltaics- based electrification project has been taken up by the Lakshadweep Administration with the support of the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources. The SPPs supply power to the main diesel generator grid, which, in turn, powers the residential areas, cottage industries and tourist cottages of the island.
