NIN scientists bag four nutrition awards

THE scientists of the National Institute of Nutrition here have bagged four awards at the 36th Annual Meetings of the Nutrition Society of India (NSI) held at Mysore last week.

The Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Mysore and the Defence Food Research Laboratories jointly hosted the meetings.

According to a NIN press release here on Monday, Dr Kamala Krishnaswamy, former Director of NIN, who is currently Emeritus Medical Scientist with the institute, received the prestigious S.G. Srikantla Memorial Oration Award. The oration was delivered on the topic "Turmeric - the salt of the orient is the spice of life".

The Junior Young Scientist Award in Community Nutrition was bagged by Mr G.M. Subba Rao, Research Officer with the Extension and Training Division of the institute for his paper titled "Impact of FAO's global school-based nutrition education initiative - feeding minds fighting hunger on school-children".

Similarly, Dr L. Singotamu, Senior Grade Deputy Director of NIN, and Dr N. Hari Shanker, Technical Officer with the National Centre for Laboratory Animal Sciences (a research centre on NIN campus), won CFTRI Awards for their poster displays on "Scanning Electron Microscope and EDAX-Ray Studies on Processed Milk Samples" and "Determination of body composition and activity by non-invasive procedures in three commonly used rat strains" respectively.
