Ashok Leyland mulls further capacity expansion

M. Ramesh

Chennai , Nov. 4

ASHOK Leyland is mulling the expansion ofits facilities even beyond the 75,000 units that its ongoing expansion programme will take its capacity to.

Post 2005, the company may begin another project to increase its capacity to one lakh vehicles, Ashok Leyland's Executive Director - Finance, Mr K. Sridharan, told Business Line on Thursday. The truck manufacturer embarked on a capex project this financial year to raise its capacity from 50,000 to 75,000 vehicles in two phases. The first phase of the project is over and the company's capacity has reached 67,500, Mr Sridharan said.

How did the company achieve it so fast? Mr Sridharan said that in the engineering industry, some de-bottlenecking would suffice to raise capacity. However, the second phase is expected to get over by December 2005, when the company's capacity will be 75,000 vehicles.

Mr Sridharan said that Ashok Leyland might want to further expand its capacity to one lakh vehicles. The company may not need to raise further funds — the foreign currency convertible bonds borrowing of $100 million would be enough, he said.
