THE Australian State of New South Wales (NSW) is wooing Indian energy companies to tap NSW expertise in providing reliable power to consumers.

The Premier of NSW, Mr Bob Carr, has invited Indian companies during the signing of a contract between the NSW-based Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) and the Budhil Hydropower project.

The $100-million Budhil Hydropower project in Himachal Pradesh is expected to provide power to consumers north of Delhi.

The SMEC agreement is worth around $500,000 and will see a team of 10 engineers provide consulting services to the giant energy project - including preliminary design services for the dam and associated power plant.

Mr Carr said that SMEC's approach to business development in India was a model for other NSW companies.

"SMEC's operations reflect the enormous potential for commercial cooperation between NSW and India," he added.
