Distribution of land is not enough: YSR

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 1

THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that mere distribution of land to the poor is not enough to improve their standard of living. The land distributed has to be developed so that the beneficiary could make a living out of it, he said, adding that human development should be the prime motive of welfare activities.

Inaugurating a two-day meeting on `Land and Poor', being organised here by the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Andhra Pradesh Academy of Rural Development (APARD) as a part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the Chief Minister pointed out that there were several instances of land allotted to the poor changing hands as it had not been viable on the part of the beneficiary to cultivate it.

With the continuous depletion of the groundwater table and frequent failure of monsoons, Dr Reddy said that dry land agriculture today has become a "lottery". He emphasised the need for reducing the cost of cultivation and increasing the productivity of crops so as to make farming a viable occupation.

The Chief Minister wanted the institutions such as APARD to take the support of non-government organisations for educating the farmers about sustainable agricultural practices. He also reiterated that his Government was committed to complete all the pending irrigation projects in the State within five years at an estimated cost of Rs 46,000 crore.

Dr Reddy on Monday laid the foundation stone for `Golden Jubilee Building Complex' being built by APARD at a cost of Rs 6.6 crore. The APARD Commissioner, Mr C. Umamaheswara Rao, said that the new building complex, comprising two hostel blocks and an administrative block, would facilitate APARD to expand its training programmes. He sought financial support from the Government for its construction.

The Minister for Rural Development, Mr D. Srinivas, and the Minister for Mines and Geology, Ms Sabita Indra Reddy, also spoke.
