THE first meeting of the Local Area Environment Committee (LAEC) for Eloor and Edayar regions has decided to form sub-committees comprising experts in the field of hazardous wastes to assist the committee while making visits to various industrial units in the region.
The committee will start visiting the industrial units from October 29 onwards in the Eloor and Edayar region. The Supreme Court Monitoring Committee on Hazardous Wastes had earlier asked the State Pollution Control Board to re-constitute the LAEC for Eloor and Edayar regions after it found that the committee set up by the board earlier was not in compliance with the SCMC directives.
Meanwhile, the LAEC, at its first meeting, asked the State PCB to submit reports of studies conducted by the board on the ecological condition of the Periyar River within 10 days. It will also consider the recommendations made in the reports prepared by the PCB while drafting the environmental audit report of industrial units in Eloor and Edayar regions.
The SCMC had earlier asked the LAEC to complete the environmental audit before March next.
