Agricultural Policy AP, Kenya mull cooperation in farming sector Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Oct. 19 A PROPOSAL to forge a partnership between Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Kenya in the field of agriculture is under active consideration of both the Governments. The High Commissioner of Kenya, Mr Mutuma Kathurima, who discussed the proposal with the AP Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that it was viable and was being looked into by the Kenyan Government. Similarly, advisor to the Chief Minister on Foreign Investment and Human Resources, Mr C.C. Reddy, told newspersons here on Tuesday that he was leaving for Kenya and Uganda on October 27 to negotiate with both the Governments and work out a draft memorandum of understanding in this regard. The partnership proposal envisages formation of cooperative societies by AP farmers so as take up lands in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda on 99-year lease to undertake agricultural activities. According to Mr C.C. Reddy, through this partnership, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will have the benefit of bringing their large stretches of barren but fertile lands under cultivation. On the other hand, the AP farmers, with their years of exposure to advanced farming technology, will be able to reap enormous economic benefits. Mr Kathurima also felt that such a partnership will lead to an increase in the agricultural output of the three countries.
