Visakhapatnam , Oct. 18

THE State Government has taken a decision to set up a super-speciality hospital at Adarshnagar here on the lines of the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

This was announced by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Monday during a brief stop-over on his way to Hyderabad from Visakhapatnam.

He told presspersons that a committee would be set up under the Chairmanship of the District Collector, Mr Praveen Prakash, within a week to ensure delineation of land from the Old Dairy Farm at Adarshnagar to the district administration for the proposed hospital.

It will be named the Visakhapatnam Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS).

Dr Reddy said that the funds required for the hospital would be raised with contributions from the Government as well as various institutions and individuals. The Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant would be requested to contribute Rs 10 crore apiece.

The Chief Minister said that there would not be any problem for allotment of 100 acres at Adarshnagar. The hospital would go a long way in serving the needs of not only North Andhra but also the people of South Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

The Minister for Commercial Taxes, Mr. Konathala Ramakrishna, later said that VIMS would be developed into a model hospital. He said the Chief Minister was very keen that the hospital building should be constructed in time.

The Visakhapatnam-I MLA, Mr Dronamraju Satyanarayana, said that besides developing an autonomous hospital on the lines of NIMS, the Chief Minister had also promised to upgrade the facilities at the King George Hospital.
