PUNJAB is setting up the country's fourth bio-technology park at a cost of around Rs 80 crore.

Dr S.R. Nair, Managing Director of Biotech Consortium India Ltd (BCIL), told Business Line here on Wednesday that Uttar Pradesh had also taken up its second bio-tech park project to be located at Lucknow.

BCIL is a company, promoted by the Department of Biotechnology of the Union Ministry of Science & Technology, which facilitates establishment of bio-tech parks in the country.

Dr Nair said that the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology has planned to locate the park in Ludhiana-Mohali area.

"However, the exact area and the site are yet to be finalised. The Punjab Park will have an incubator and common instrumentation centre," Dr Nair added.

The UP project location has already been identified by the Government. The bio-tech park would come up at a 14-acre area near the State Capital's airport, which already houses four laboratories of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

The implementation of the first phase of the project would start soon and the cost has been estimated to be around Rs 18 crore, Dr Nair said.

BCIL will provide consultancy for both the proposed parks.

BCIL drew up the business plans and acted as the strategic advisors for the first three bio-tech park projects in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and UP. The AP project at Hyderabad is promoted by joint venture between Shapoorji Pallonji & Co and the State Government.

Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation is the promoter of the biotech park at Ernakulam and Kalmassery.

Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority is behind the first park in UP.
