Bengal steps into bio-tech park arena

WEST Bengal is moving ahead to set up a bio-technology park in collaboration with the Bose Institute and Biotech Consortium of India Ltd.
This was stated by the State's Commerce and Industries Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, on Wednesday after the inaugural session of the round table on application of biotechnology organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
The Minister said that the proposal was being placed on the drawing board and, shortly, the initial steps would be taken up. "We are considering a location near the city. The Bidhan Chandra Agriculture University and the West Bengal departments of agriculture and horticulture would also be involved in the project. The West Bengal State Council of Biotechnology would pilot the project, Mr Sen said.
The Minister said that the Government laid emphasis on development of this sector to provide impetus to agriculture, particularly plant bio-technology and organic cultivation, to increase crop productivity and value addition.
