Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rotary International, in association with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, P.N. Panicker Foundation, Central Bank of India and the Adivasi Mahasabha, is launching an integrated literacy programme for adivasis in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Called the RAIL (Rotary Adivasi Integrated Literacy) Project, the venture has several components including a basic literacy programme, a continuing education initiative and a computer literacy programme, said Mr N. Balagopal, convenor of Rotary International's literacy programme.

Addressing a press conference in the city today, he said the RAIL project would also attempt to create employment opportunities for Adivasis.

In fact, one component of the project involves providing adivasis with the finance required to run micro-enterprises such as bee keeping, he added. The project will be inaugurated on October 7 at the Ponpara Adivasi settlement near Thiruvananthapuram.
