Cotton Bt Cotton crop likely to create problem of plenty in AP Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Oct. 4 GOOD crop is not always good news! The bumper cotton crop estimated during Kharif 2004 in the State is proving to be a headache for the administration. The State Government is now concerned that many more farmers could possibly take to cotton cultivation during the coming season enthused by the output from the Kharif. It plans to take up a campaign to educate farmers against excessive cotton cultivation. While the overall cotton crop acreage had come down to some extent, the farmers are in a position to reap better results mainly driven by extensive use of Bt Cotton this season, according to the State Agriculture Commissioner, Ms Poonam Malkondaiah. The increased crop coverage and overall good cotton crop yield this year is due to various factors, including increased acreage under Bt Cotton. However, farmers intending to opt for cotton need to guard against spurious seeds in the name of Bt Cotton, she explained. The Union Agriculture Secretary, Ms Radha Singh, said that apart from the traditional modes of cotton procurement, the Union Government is considering the possibility of attracting cotton procurement agencies of mills so that the entire quality produce, grade-wise could be picked up by such associations. "However, we need to provide the necessary data upfront as to various qualities of cotton produce before hand so that there is no ambiguity," she said.
