Metro Cash & Carry to help improve Karnataka farm supply chain

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Oct. 4

METRO Cash & Carry would be willing to help the State to improve the marketing and supply chain infrastructure for agriculture and other farm produce.

It will directly involve itself with local organisations to improve marketing facilities and ensure better prices to farmers, said Mr Henry Birr, Vice President, Internal Affairs, Metro AG.

The Germany-based self-service wholesale business, which has set up two large outlets for retailers to access commodities under one roof to reduce the cost of acquisition and improve margins, has already initiated a programme to improve training facilities for sheep farmers and fisher folk. The programme, under a private-public partnership, involved contribution of Rs 2.7 crore by Metro and DEG, a leading development finance institution of Europe. This programme will assist the Karnataka Sheep and Wool Development Corporation and Fisheries Department with upgradation of training programme by the Board and improving supply chain for fish and meat.

Mr Birr, while talking to reporters on the initiative, however stressed that the State Government should amend the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Act, to enable the private sector to involve directly with the farmers to solve the marketing problems.

"The Indian supply structure, particularly for agriculture, requires both reform and investment," Mr Birr said.
