Good monsoon week in Kerala

Our Bureau

THE week ending September 29 saw most parts of the State receiving either `excess' or `normal' precipitation. Alappuzha and Kasaragode district, which recorded `deficient' rainfall, were the only exception to the trend.

But the season's rainfall (June 1 to September 29) revealed a different picture. Six districts - Idukki, Kannur, Kollam, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram - accounted for `normal' rainfall while the rest eight - Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kasaragode, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Wayanad - received `deficient' rainfall.

According to the Agromet Bulletin dated September 30 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, the chief amounts of rainfall recorded during the week ending September 29 are as follows:

Sept 27: Kottayam - 7; Koilandy - 6; Kollengode - 5; Kanjirappally and Thiruvalla - 4 each; and Irinjalakkuda and Chalakkudy - 3 each.

Sept 28: Vadakara - 16; Thalassery and Chalakkudy - 8 each; Koilandy and Kodungallur - 7 each; Kochi Airport, Piravom and Enamackel - 6 each; Cherthala and Cochin International Airport - 5 each; Ponnani and Nedumangad - 4 each; and Aluva, Perumbavur, Hosdurg, Kozhikode, Pattambi and Konni - 3 each.

Sept 29: Munnar - 7; Nilambur - 6; Vadakara - 4; Hosdurg and Ambalavayal - 3 each; and Mannarkad and Kuppad - 2 each.

Mean relative humidity varied between 77 per cent and 90 per cent in various districts, mean cloud coverage between 5 okta and 7 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 8 kmph.

Forecast valid until the morning of October 2 spoke about the possibility of rain at a few places in all districts.

Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change.

Stage and state of crops: Harvesting of the `Virippu' paddy crop is almost over, while land preparation, sowing and transplanting in the case of the `Mundakan' crop is in progress. Weeding, fertiliser and green manure application continue in coconut and arecanut. New planting is being taken up in banana, tapioca and seasonal vegetables. Rubber tapping is proceeding apace.

Farm advisory: Weeding and manuring can be continued in coconut, arecanut, cashew and spices. Transplanting of seedlings should be resorted to only two weeks after the application of organic manure in `Mundakan' fields.
