More rains forecast in Kerala

AN end-phase monsoon splash is dumping rain in most parts of Kerala as elsewhere in the peninsula.

According to the Agromet Bulletin dated September 27 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, rain occurred at many places in the State on September 25 and 26, a few places on September 24 and isolated places on September 23.

Chief amounts of rainfall in cm are (Sept 24 to 26):

Sept. 24: Kollam - 6; Chengannur and Neyyattinkara - 4 each; Angadipuram and Thiruvalla - 3 each; and Punalur and Kumarakom - 2 each.

Sept. 25: Kozhikode and Ponnani - 5 each; Koilandy - 4; Vadakara, Manjeri and Punalur - 3 each; and Ambalavayal, Karipur Airport, Kannur, Alappuzha, Vadakkancherry, Kannara, Kayamkulam, Thalassery and Pattambi - 1 each.

Sept. 26: Thalassery - 5; Cochin International Airport and Punalur - three each; and Aluva, Karipur Airport and Kottayam - 2 each.

Mean relative humidity varied between 74 per cent and 90 per cent in various districts, mean cloud coverage between 5 okta and 8 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 6 kmph.

Forecast valid until September 29 spoke about the possibility of rain at most places in the State. A heavy rainfall warning has also been issued for isolated places in the State during 48 hours ending on September 29. Outlook for the subsequent two days did not indicate any significant change.

Stage and state of crops: Harvesting of the `Virippu' crop is almost over, while land preparation, sowing and transplanting for the `Mundakan' crop is in progress. Weeding and application of fertilisers and green manure are apace in coconut and arecanut.

Farm advisory: Transplanting of seedlings should be done only after the lapse of two weeks following the application of organic manure in `Mundakan' paddy fields. Weeding and manuring operations can be continued in coconut, arecanut, cashew and spices.
