Anti-dumping duty on methylene chloride imports from Korea

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi , Sept. 25

THE Finance Ministry has imposed definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of methylene chloride originating in or exported from South Korea.

The definitive anti-dumping duty, unless reviewed, lasts for a period of five years.

Methylene chloride is a colourless, volatile liquid with chloroform-like odour. It is used in photo films, bulk drugs and also in the manufacture of foam, fumigants and agrochemicals. It is also used as a paint remover.

Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd (GACL), SRF Ltd and Chemplast Sanmar Ltd, Chennai are some of the producers of methylene chloride in the country.

The Designated Authority had, last month, recommended the imposition of definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of methylene chloride from South Korea.

In the case of methylene chlorine produced by Samsung Fine Chemicals and exported by Samsung Corporation, the Finance Ministry has pegged the anti-dumping duty at $34.43 per tonne. For the methylene chloride produced and exported by any other producer or exporter, the Revenue Department has imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty of $42.42 per tonne.
