A.K. Puri selected CMD of BHEL

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 21

MR A.K. Puri, currently on the board of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) as Director (Power), has been selected to take over as Chairman and Managing Director of the public sector power equipment major.

BHEL, virtually the only bright star under the Ministry of Heavy Industry, has been functioning without a regular chief since October last year when Mr K.G. Ramachandran retired from the post.

According to Ministry sources, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, approved Mr Puri's appointment before leaving for the UK and the US on Sunday last. On receipt of the official orders, Mr Puri will be taking over charge from Mr H.W. Bhatnagar, who has been heading the public sector undertaking as Chairman of the Committee of Directors. The committee was formed by the Government in February this year following a petition filed in the Delhi High Court.
