ICICI Bank move flayed by Kerala Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, has urged the State Government to initiate urgent measures to block `attempts' by the ICICI Bank to take over the Aluva-based Federal Bank.

In a statement here, Mr Achuthanandan said the takeover would hurt the interests of the rural economy of Kerala, as the operations of Federal Bank were concentrated in the rural areas of the State. Around 40 per cent of its branches were located in rural areas as against the nine per cent of nationalised banks. Federal Bank also had a better credit-deposit ratio as compared to the nationalised banks, he said.
